WALTER STEELE ALLEN Walter Steele Allen, Sr. age 89, of Moundville, died March 31, 2016 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be Sunday, April 3, at 3:30 at Moundville United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tom Terry and Rev. Brian Wyatt officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery; Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be from 1:30pm - 3:30pm. Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Charley and Henrietta Allen of Ward, Alabama, his wife of 42 years, Mollie Leavelle, two brothers, Willard Ezell Allen, and Charles Neal Allen, and one sister, Ruth Allen Baskin. He is survived by sister Mary Allen Jolley of Tuscaloosa; son Walter (Al) Steele Allen, Jr. (Cheryl) of Clinton, SC; daughters Judy Allen Voss and Henrietta Allen Wallace (Joseph) of Tuscaloosa; grandchildren Elizabeth Allen Bean (Shawn) of Knoxville, TN, Joseph Brittain Voss (Monica Krasulja) of Chicago, IL, Walter Allen Voss of Tuscaloosa, Charles Allen Wallace (Rachel Clasing) of Gettysburg, PA, Jerald Payden Wallace (Chelsea) of Lexington, KY, Mollie Elizabeth Wallace (Matthew Amick) of Tuscaloosa, AL; and one great-grandchild, Joshua Allen Bean of Knoxville, TN. Walter was born in the community of Kinterbish in Sumter County. Known affectionately by family as "Bunt,"� he was a graduate of Ward High School and served his country in the US Navy (Construction Battalion) during WWII. He attended Auburn University in 1947, where he played football. He later transferred and graduated from Livingston State Teacher"�s College. He was a high school teacher and football coach. He left teaching and entered the chemical manufacturing industry where he spent the rest of his employment with several chemical companies in the state. He and his wife Mollie built a house in Moundville, where he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to ride horses and work on a farm. He was a member of Big Sandy and Moundville United Methodist churches respectively. In addition to teaching Sunday school, he and his wife Mollie were active youth leaders at Big Sandy UM. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bank of Moundville and as a commissioner for Hale County, honoring his family tradition of leadership in all areas that contributed to making a better community. During his service, he worked with students from Auburn"�s "Rural Studio"� program on the planning and construction of the Hale County Animal Shelter. After his public service, he enjoyed volunteering at the Moundville Thrift Shop, which he visited every Friday until he was no longer able. Pallbearers will be Neal Allen, Brittain Voss, Allen Voss, Chase Wallace, Payden Wallace, Shawn Bean, Elizabeth Bean, Mollie Beth Wallace, Chelsea Wallace, Monica Krasulja, Rachel Clasing and Matthew Amick. Honorary pallbearers include nurses at Hospice of West Alabama, volunteer staff at Moundville Thrift Shop, former members of the youth group lead by Mr. and Mrs. Allen at Big Sandy United Methodist Church, former and current employees of the Bank of Moundville, former and current officers and board members of the Bank of Moundville, employees of West Alabama Mechanical, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Duncan, Mr. and Mrs. Rogers Warren, Mr. and Mrs. Nevin Tidmore, Mr. and Mrs. George Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. Clint Tucker and family, Mr. and Mrs. Clifton Windham, Ralph Vawters, Pete Vawters, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Nevin, Diane Davis, Allen Harland, Katie Wyatt, Candice Rickman, Dr. Steve Lovelady, Dr. Sakina Kamal, Mr. and Mrs. Tommy Martin, Stanley Myers, Mr. and Mrs. Danny Curtis, Students, Faculty and Staff of Auburn University"�s Rural Studio, former Rural Studio students Julieta (Julie) Collart, Connelly Farr, Lana Smelley and Jeff Bazzell. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Hospice of West Alabama and Moundville United Methodist Church.
