Thomas Perry

Thomas Douglas Perry
MOUNDVILLE - Thomas Douglas Perry, 66, of Moundville, Alabama died yesterday after a long illness.
He is survived by his sisters, Marjean Perry Childree and Norma Perry; brothers, Chuck and Clint Perry; numerous and much beloved nieces and nephews; his husband and constant companion of 32 years, David Massey also of Moundville; and faithful canine, Sarge.
Doug was a lifelong friend of the arts in Alabama. A graduate of University of Montevallo, he performed on stage with Montgomery Little Theatre as an actor throughout the 1970s. He worked for the Alabama State Council on the Arts through an NEA grant and in the early 1980s, he became the first general manager of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival while the State Theatre was still in Anniston. Doug remained as ASF general manager through the move to Montgomery into the Carolyn Blount Theatre in 1985.
In 1989 he was the recipient of the Governor's Arts Award from the Alabama State Council on the Arts, the highest honor, for his work in arts administration. In 1993 he became general manager for Virginia Stage Company, and in 1995 he returned home to Alabama as the general manager of Theatre Tuscaloosa. He was instrumental in bringing the Alabama Stage and Screen Hall of Fame into existence in 1999 at Shelton State Community College. He retired to his home in Moundville and enjoyed time spent with friends. We will miss his unbelievably sharp wit and his ability to make us laugh. We will forever love you more than our luggage, Doug.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to A Theatre Tuscaloosa Endowment Fund.
Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
