Sue Ella Whitfield Mitchell Whaley, died peacefully on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at home. Funeral services will be at Oakwood Cemetery on Saturday, December 21 at 2p.m. Sue was born to Rufus Milton and Ella Louise Ryan Whitfield on October 8, 1937, in Havana, Hale County, Alabama, the sixth of twelve children. She graduated from Greensboro High School in 1957 and worked as a seamstress, teaching assistant at Greensboro Public School West, and co-business owner of The Country Touch.
Sue was a member of the Greensboro Baptist Church and delighted in spending time with family and friends.
Preceding Sue in death were her parents Rufus Milton and Ella Louise Ryan Whitfield; husbands, Wallace Garner Mitchell (1957 to his death in 1976) and Fred McClain Whaley ( 1978 to his death in 2022); grandson Dennis Griffin; great-grandson Wallace G. Mitchell III; sisters Mary Payne, Margie Holladay, Jean Westbrook, Pat Kynard, and Norma Martin; brothers Charles, John, and Donald Whitfield; and daughter-in-law Sally Whaley.
She is survived by her sister, Rebecca Jockisch, brothers, Wayne and Danny Whitfield; children Steve Mitchell (Michelle), Darryl Mitchell (Gwen), Dave Mitchell (Tina), Joel Mitchell (Roxanne), Mike Whaley (Janet), Mary Etta Whaley, Mark Whaley (Andrea), and Amanda Griffin (Mike), grandchildren, Wallace Mitchell (Jennifer), Brittany Griffin (Brad), Dane Mitchell, Heath Mitchell (Katherine), Chase Mitchell (Gigi), Matthew Mitchell (Amber), Courtney Arrington, Cecil Whaley (Kaley), Hannah Whaley, Robert Mitchell, Arie Mitchell, James Mitchell, and Thomas Mitchell; great-grandchildren Hunter Griffin, John Matthew Griffin, Sadie Grace Griffin, Grayson Griffin, Anne Miller Mitchell, Holden Lee Mitchell, Christina Mitchell, Ella Grace Mitchell, Luke Mitchell Ethan Mitchell, Josh Mitchell, and Natalie Whaley, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Wallace Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Heath Mitchell, Chase Mitchell, Dane Mitchell, Robert Mitchell, and Cecil Whaley.
The family deeply appreciates the loving kindness, friendship, and caring given to Sue by Ms. Donna (DJ)Thomas during her illness.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Greensboro Oakwood Cemetery maintenance fund.
