Sara Hamner Allen, age 81, departed this world on February 4, 2025 at Aspire of West Alabama after a lengthy battle with Dementia. Graveside services will be held on Friday, February 7, 2025 at 11:00 a.m., with Linda Pongerayter officiating and Magnolia Chapel North directing.
She was preceded in death by her son, Rodger Cannon; parents, Tommy Hamner and Wilsie Jones; brothers, Aaron, Leon, Bob, and Donald Hamner; and sister, Joan Maddox.
Survivors include her children, Denise Smith (Scott), Barbara Winters (Joey), and Robert Cannon (Cindy Prill). She left behind her grandchildren, Dave and Justin Reece, Lauren Winters, Sara Stewart (Kyle), Chelsea Collins; and great-grandchildren, Brody, Lilah, Ryder, and Dakota.
Sara was a wonderful mother, friend, and confidante. She fiercely loved her family and doted on them if she was able. In the past few months, she had grown weary of this world; her last words were, "I don't like it here, I am tired of all of this," and Jesus said, "Come, go with me and she did!" She will be forever missed; our lives are richer because of this strong woman and her unconditional love. She loved to dance, winning several Jitterbug contests, and was a bowling champion. She retired from Uniroyal Goodrich after 23 years as one of the first hired female tire builders. Before that, she had worked at the Holiday Inn and often had breakfast with Bear Bryant (he taught her how to make coffee). She taught us to love hard, to be generous when we can, and to remember that we are all "going through something."
Dementia is a cruel thief, robbing our sweet mother of the past 18 years. Our prayers go out to those still amid this disease.
Those serving as pallbearers are Dave Reece, Justin Reece, Duel McBride, David Beck, and Sean Cannon.
Honorary pallbearers include her sister-in-law, Paulette Hamner, Jane Essary, life-long friend, Vera Campbell, and Liz and Isaac Espy.
Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alzheimer's Association or Gideon's International in memory of Mom.
