Sam "Sammy"� Matherson TUSCALOOSA | Sam ""Sammy"" Matherson, age 39, of Tuscaloosa, died Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, August 7, 2015 at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South with Rev. Aaron Chadwick and Rev. Michael Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Moundville, Ala. with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be Thursday, August 6, 2015 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Gavin Lewis. Survivors include his wife, Debra Langham Matherson; sons, Lincoln Jerry Matherson and Rhett Alexander Matherson; brother, Brad Matherson (Jeannie); parents, Jerry and Carolyn Matherson; and mother and father-in-law, Blaine and Becky Langham. Sam was a 1994 graduate of Hale County High School where he was an outstanding athlete playing both baseball and football. He was a member of the 1994 2A State Championship team in baseball. He continued playing for Shelton State and Montevallo. Sam received an accounting degree from the University of Alabama. He held several accounting positions throughout his career in Tuscaloosa and Birmingham including partner at Homan Freight. Sam was a Charter Member of The Word Community Church and was a devoted and active participant. He was an outstanding cook and used this talent to serve the Lord and the Sons of Thunder Ministry. He was always planning menus for church functions and his meals were always enjoyed by all. Sam was an avid hunter and fisherman spending many hours hunting and fishing with his sons, father, brother and friends. Sam's love of God was evident in the way he lived his life. He had a true servant's heart and was always helping others. His love for his wife and sons was based on his strong faith in God. Family was second only to God. He was an outstanding husband, daddy, son, brother and friend. His presence and love will be missed by many but his memory will not cease. Pallbearers will be Matt Hartley, Isaac Holman, Rodney Connell, Tim Clements, Michael Allgood, Jay McCollum, Jeff Hannah, Kyson Ryan, Chuck Jay and Zak Homan. Honorary pallbearers are members of Sons of Thunder Men's Ministry.
