Russell Lowell McGhee GREENSBORO | Russell Lowell McGhee, age 98, of Greensboro, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at his home in Greensboro. Graveside services are scheduled for Saturday, March 29, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Oakwood Cemetery in Greensboro. Russell was born in Catherine, Ala., in Wilcox County on August 9, 1915 and raised in Coatopa, Ala. After graduating from high school, Russell moved to New York City in 1937 where for the next 17 years, he managed the Strand Theater. Russell's career in the theater business was interrupted in 1941 by World War II where he spent the next four years in the Pacific Theater. Russell was discharged at the war's end in 1945, reaching the rank of First Sergeant. Russell returned to New York after the war and continued in the theater business until 1954 at which time he moved to Denver, Colo. where he lived until advancing age and severe winters dictated a move back to Greensboro in 2002 to be near relatives. Mr. McGhee is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Lee and Ruth M. Barnecastle McGhee and siblings, Leroy McGhee, Lois (Lamar) Hall, Sadie M. (Carroll) Howard, and Geraldine M. (Albert) Tibbs and nephews, Richard Hall and Thomas Tibbs. He is survived by his nephews, Lamar (Anna) Hall of Greensboro, Ala., and Albert (Patricia) Tibbs of Orlando, Fla., and nieces, Carolyn H. (Fred) Langdon of Birmingham, Ala., and Suzanne Tibbs of Gilbert Ariz. He is also survived by several great-nieces and nephews. Russell often remarked to family that he always tried to do the right thing and hoped that he would leave the world better than he found it. All who knew him would testify that he did. He will be missed. In accordance with his wishes, in lieu of flowers, it is requested that donations be made to Comfort Care Hospice of Demopolis, 935 U.S. Hwy 80 W. Demopolis, AL 36732, Wounded Warrior Project, woundedwarriorproject.org, Veterans of Foreign Wars, www.vtws.org or St Jude Hospital, www.StJude.org.
