Rev. James Thomas "Tom" Terry
MOUNDVILLE - Rev. James Thomas "Tom" Terry, age 84, of Moundville, Ala., died January 31, 2019, at Regency Pointe Assisted Living in Rainbow City, Ala. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, February 2, 2019, at Moundville United Methodist Church with Rev. Reba Wiley and Rev. Michael Cobb officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South, directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. Terry, Sr. and Mattie Frances Terry; brother, William and sister, Lib.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Freeman Terry; sons, Robert McGwier (Sharon), Michael McGwier (Susan), Bryan McGwier (Candace), James Terry (Connie) and Hugh Terry (Phoebe); sister, Evelyn Davis (Edgar); 15 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
A graduate of Hale County High School and Birmingham Southern College, Tom went on to receive a Masters of Divinity from Vanderbilt University. He was a United Methodist Pastor for over forty years, serving both small and large congregations in Alabama and Tennessee. Born in Moundville, Ala., he returned there to lead the Moundville and Stewart United Methodist Churches in the early 1990s. After retirement from the ministry, he went on to become a farmer raising cows and peaches. He will also be remembered for his work to achieve peaceful integration during the Civil Rights era in his role as a United Methodist minister.
