While in high school Raymond was recognized as the winner of the Farm Electrification Contest at the National Convention of the Future Farmers of America. Raymond's penchant for mechanical and electrical systems led to his long career as a maintenance technician on commercial HVAC systems where he worked for Johnson Controls and later for York. He was a member for nearly 60 years of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union No. 372, and at the time of his death was the oldest member of Local 372.
Raymond loved hunting and fishing and engaging in new interests such as beekeeping, building a kit hot rod, penmaking, woodcarving, motorcycling, and milling his own lumber. He had a quiet confidence born of the ability to conceive, build, and repair anything electrical and mechanical. His greatest joy lay in working with his hands. His handiwork lives on in the homes of his family members.
