Phyllis Pugh Szabo NORTHPORT Phyllis Pugh Szabo, age 74, of Northport, died July 5, 2013, after a severe illness. Graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Rock Creek Church of God Cemetery, Concord Community, near Hueytown, with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. She is preceded in death by her husband, Michael W. Szabo. Survivors include her sister, Luvenia Butler (Ted) of Rock Creek, Ala., her aunt, Evelyn Sharit of Birmingham; and several cousins scattered around the country. She was born April 12, 1939, in Rock Creek, Ala. She attended Concord Elementary School, Hueytown High School, and went to Judson College for one year. She then transferred and graduated from Birmingham Southern College in 1961, where she majored in Elementary Education, and minored in Music. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Kappa Delta Epsilon. Phyllis taught kindergarten, first and second grades in Birmingham, Jefferson County, and Tuscaloosa County. She also taught piano and organ lessons for several years. She married Michael W. Szabo in 1961, and moved to Tuscaloosa, where he was head of The State Geological Survey, and was in charge of the state maps. Phyllis and Michael were faithful members of St. Matthias Episcopal Church in Tuscaloosa. They loved to go camping and did so whenever possible.
