Peggy J. McAteer TUSCALOOSA - Peggy J. McAteer, age 75, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., died Sunday, December 18, 2016, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2016, at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South with Rev. Curtis Kelley and Rev. Ed King officiating and burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Moundville, Ala. with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Watson and Lucille Griffin; daughter, Joyce Kelley; and brother, John Griffin. Survivors include her husband, Charles McAteer, Jr.; daughters, Marye Anna Murray (Tyrone), Melony Smithson (Jeff) and Wendy Lynn (Brad); son, Benji Elliott; sisters, Margaret Coleman, Lorene Watson and Lottice Thomas; brothers, Paul Griffin and Charles Griffin; grandchildren, Mike Gray (Melissa), Brad Gray, Sam Kelley, Ben Kelley, Kyle Smithson (Mallory), Caroline Smithson, Melissa Felton, William Lynn and Sarah Lynn; and several great-grandchildren. Peggy retired from the Tuscaloosa Police Department after 20 years of service as secretary to three chiefs of police. She was a strong person with a very giving spirit. Everyone that knew Peggy knew of her great smile and joyful laughter. She always believed that you need to live well, love much and laugh often. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers are Ken Swindle, Cancer Care Center of Tuscaloosa, Dr. Larry Skelton and staff, past and present employees of the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Kay Junkin, Judy Smith and members of Taylorville Baptist Church, Crestline Baptist Church and Joanne and George Hinton. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of West Alabama.
