Norma Owen Strouss Norma Owen Strouss, 89, a long-time resident of Birmingham, died April 15, 2014 at the Lantern of Morning Pointe in Tuscaloosa. She was the beloved wife of the late William Shaw Strouss, Jr., whom she met while both were working at Bell South in Atlanta, GA. Norma was a graduate of Girls High School in Atlanta, GA. She also attended classes of interest at University of Georgia and Jefferson State Junior College. She worked as a supervisor in the Bell South accounting department in Atlanta during WW II until she married Bill and they transferred to Birmingham. Norma led her life loving and supporting her family, friends and church. Norma was a Girl Scout leader, a Scouting parent in Huffman Boy Scout Troop 124, a Sunday school teacher, a volunteer Crisis Center phone counselor, and Huffman High School Band Booster. She enjoyed bridge, square dancing, ballroom dancing, and camping with her husband and family. Norma was a member of Huffman United Methodist Church for over 30 years, until she transferred to Asbury United Methodist Church after moving to that area. More recently, she moved to Tuscaloosa, AL where she was a member of Trinity UMC. She is predeceased by her husband, Bill Strouss; her parents, Rosa and Henry Norman Owen; two brothers, Samuel D. Owen and Henry N. Owen (Sarah Taylor); and one sister, Mary Lou Owen, all of Atlanta GA. She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Linda Patterson (Jeff) of Tuscaloosa, AL, Gayle Blackerby (Steve) of Raleigh, NC, William "Bill"� Strouss (Loretta) of Birmingham, AL, and Bonnie Feniger (Bruce) of Carmel, NY. Norma is also survived by eleven grandchildren: Lani Grove (Dylan), Curt and Scott Patterson; Evan Blackerby (Heather Royall), Abigail Blackerby Mattis (Michael) and Caitlin Blackerby; Lauren, Cameron and Erin Strouss; Leah and Will Feniger; five great-grandchildren, Grace Riane Smitherman, Jude Shaw Blackerby and Lucy Boone Blackerby, Eve Elizabeth Mattis and Stephen Michael Mattis; grandson-in-law, Jonathan Smitherman; niece Alice Owen Gardner (Dan), and nephews, Norman (Masami) and David Owen (Linda). A memorial service will be held at Huffman United Methodist Church on Monday, June 2, 2014. Our family will receive visitors in the Parlor at 2:00 pm, with the service in the Sanctuary at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Focus on Senior Citizens, the organization that helped our mother cope with the loss of her sight.
