Newell Nevin "Possum" Tidmore, Sr. Moundville / Newell Nevin "Possum" Tidmore, Sr. age 79 of Moundville passed away August 25, 2014 at DCH Regional Medical Center. Services will be held on Thursday August 28, 2014 at 11:00am at Moundville Baptist Church with Rev. Ed King officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 6pm until 8pm at the funeral home. Newell Nevin "Possum" Tidmore was born in the family home in King's Hollow south of Moundville to Ernest Jackson Tidmore and Octavia Nevin Tidmore. When he was five, his mother passed away and he went to live with the Erbie Nevin family in Powers. When seven he walked the six mileshome after being hit in the head with a hammer during kid's horseplay. Possum graduated from Hale County High School and always credited his sole academic ability that allowed him to graduate to being half back for the Wildcats. He served in the Army in post WW II Europe and was often ribbed for being the Drill Sargent's chauffeur during calisthenics. June 15, 1960 he married a very pretty Catholic girl, Marie Antoinette "Annette" Rice. Together they reared four children, Dorothy Annette Smith (Tim), Newell Nevin Tidmore, Jr. (Cindy), Erbie Dixon Tidmore (Jane Ellen) and Rhonda Renae Evans (Tim) whom they often boasted all graduated from college. Possum, with black wavy hair, earned a second nickname at Billy Moore's Horns Drive in when a young girl pointed and ask her mother, "is that Elvis?". After running a service station and working at the Rubber Plant , he retired from the VA Hospital. Possum was preceded in death by his parents, step mother Lois Tidmore, four brothers Ernest Jackson "Big Jack" Tidmore, Jr. , Archie Dixon "A.D." Tidmore, Vernon Lindenberg "Tap" Tidmore and Erbie Chester "Tid" Tidmore. He is survived by his wife, children, step sister Nelda Ball, numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his dog Rowdy. Pallbearers will be David Tidmore, Jason Smith, Trey Tidmore, Nicholas Evans, Joey Tidmore, Chase Kelly, and Dickie Tidmore. Honorary Pallbearers will be Hale County High School class of 1954, employees of VA Medical Center Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and employees and patients at Moundville Health and Rehab. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to The Greensboro Boys and Girls Club PO Box 40221 Tuscaloosa, Alabama 35404.
