Melvin D. Mathews Sr. | COTTONDALE Melvin D. Mathews Sr., age 65, of Cottondale, died Jan. 14, 2012, at UAB Palliative Care Unit. Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South with Rev. Charles Lenn, Rev. Jimmy Garner, and Rev. Dawson Morrison officiating. Burial will follow in Duncanville Community Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his father, Hobson Mathews, and stepfather, Roy A. Woods. Survivors include his wife, Jorene Mathews; daughter, Victoria Mathews; sons, David Mathews (Rhonda) and Daniel Mathews (Nicole); brother, Andy Mathews (Barbara); and mother, Helon Woods. He worked for the BF Goodrich Tire Plant for 37 years. He was a Christian who loved the Lord and his family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Special thanks to Rev. Dawson Morrison, Rev. Charles Lenn, and Tuscaloosa First Assembly Church; Rev. Jimmy Garner and Skyland Blvd. Baptist Church; the doctors and nurses of UAB Palliative Care Unit; and the many friends who have been a constant comfort to us. Honorary pallbearers are Don Sexton, Wayne Seale, Buddy Brown and other members of E Crew, Area 6 Maintenance at BF Goodrich Tire Plant.
