Melvin Esmal Herndon died unexpectedly on August 3, 2017. He was born July 21, 1931 to Esmal and Sadie Herndon. Married to his loving wife, Patricia Sumner, they have two daughters, Sherrie Dorsett (Jim) of Prattville, Ala. and Melinda Landers (Rod) of Birmingham, Ala. He has four grandchildren, Jamie Jackson (Martin), Toxey Dorsett (Adrienne), Sam Landers and Scott Landers and three great-grandchildren, Dorsett Jackson, Sumner Jackson and Knowlton Jackson. He is also survived by two sisters, Annette Hallman (Horace) and Lela Davis; two brothers, T.C. Herndon (Sheila) and Amond Herndon (Christine); and a host of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Bill Davis. Melvin graduated from Greene County High School and attended the University of Alabama. Mr. Herndon also served in the Army in the Korean War. He retired from Gulf States Paper after 34 years to focus on his love of farming and cattle. He was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and we rest in the fact that he will be with his Savior forever. We will celebrate his life Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Union Christian Church with a one hour visitation held prior to the 2:00 p.m. service and burial to follow with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. His nephews and grandsons will be his pallbearers with nephew, Ray Hallman, officiating the service. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
