Mary Elizabeth Johnson Stokes, 83, of Newbern, Alabama died Monday, may 17, at DCH Regional Medical Center.
Mary was born September 16, 1937 in Perry County to the late L.C. Johnson and Alberta Cook Johnson. In addition to her parents, she is preceeded in death by her husband, Haywood Flinn Stokes Jr., and her brother Johnny Johnson of Cottondale, Alabama. As a young mother, she was a seamstress and sewed many a garment until she went to work at Winn Dixie in Greensboro, Alabama. After she retired as Head Cashier at the Brent Store, she worked for Parr's Chevron and then at Frank's Pharmacy both in Greensboro.
She is survived by her daughters, Dena Tucker (Ricky) and Sharon Stokes; a son, Haywood F. Stokes III (Betty) all of Newburn, Alabama. She also leaves five grandchildren; Jennifer Cassity (Ryan) of Gallion, Alabama, Dr. Jamie Lynn Tucker, PharmD of Chinle, Arizona, Jaclyn Rogers (Matthew) of Greensboro, Alabama, Sydney, Stokes (Jamie Fisher) and Kristopher Stokes (Megan) of Greenboro, Alabama; and ten great-grandchildren: Madeline Bushaw (Brandon), Marianna Pearson, Katie Marie Hewitt, Stokes Hewitt, Drew Rogers, Addie Grace Rogers, Emma Flinn Rogers, Colton Fisher, Colby Fisher, and Sawyer Stokes. Sister, Linda Wyatt (Gary) of Northport, Alabama; Brothers, Dencil Johnson of Cottondale, Alabama and Charles Johnson of Greensboro, Alabama, Sister-in-Law Mary Stokes Westbrook of Linden, Alabama along with many nieces and nephews.
Pastors Anita Wilburn and Steve Vernon will officiate along with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Graveside services will be at Newburn Cemetery, Newburn, Alabama, Thursday, May 20, 2021 at 11am. Pallbearers will be Kristopher Stokes, Jamie Fisher, Ryan Cassity, Matthew Rogers, Joe Wilkerson, and Scott Williams.
