Survivors include her daughter, Mary Diane Palmer; sons, James Marion Johnson, Sr. and Don Larry Johnson; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mary Alice, our mother and grandmother (Granny) was born in Samson, Alabama on April 12, 1921, to Mamie Gertrude Cope Powell and Ollie Damascus Powell. Her mother passed away several days after her birth, and her father was unable to care for a newborn and her two-year-old sister. Her biological Aunt, Cillia Clark Ann Holley (known to us as Momma Holley) and her husband Thomas Marion Holley (nickname Bully) claimed our mother as their own and raised her in Kinston, Alabama along with their four older sons Runt, Bob, Owl, Morgan and daughter, Doll. She was loved very much and returned that love to them all. She graduated from Kinston high School and went off to nursing school for a short period of time but returned to Kinston, Alabama and remained with Momma Holley. There was a Greyhound bus driver that drove through Kinston daily and stopped at a little country store that was beside the house where she lived with Momma Holley his name was Ausborn Davis Johnson, known to many as Red Johnson. He met Mary Alice in the store, and they saw each other every day as he made his bus stops driving through Kinston. They married on May 18, 1940, which was actually their fourth real date. They had three children James Marion Johnson, Don Larry Johnson, and Mary Diane Johnson Palmer. They came to have eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter. Our mother continued to live in Foley, Alabama after the death of our daddy in May of 1984. She made a good life for herself and had many friends and was very involved member of Trinity Baptist Church that she loved. She always gave God the glory and credit for all she did. She worked as long as she could on into her 80"s and enjoyed her job at Wal-Mart and the Counsel of the Aging. She had a fall in the Greyhound Bus station in Mobile, Alabama in December 2007, after surgery and recuperation in Birmingham she remained living with Diane because of her age and safety. She had a quiet life and enjoyed her daily routine of going to the senior center to play Mexican Dominoes, and her all-time favorite was Bingo where she could win prizes. As the aging process continued and her health began to decline she came to live at Heritage Health Care in Northport, Alabama in October 2014. She was cared for very well and visited by family. Her granddaughter Shannon spent much time with her and Granny was glad to have her there with her. Our mother and grandmother loved us all very much, and there was nothing she would not do for her children or grandchildren, especially her three children. She loved us all very much and those days when you did not feel loved you knew one person did and that was mother. Her life, love, and all the wonderful memories will be ours to hold in our hearts forever. Mary Alice Johnson was a loving mother, good person, friend and a wonderful woman, she is now in heaven with many people that she loved and went before her.
