Martha Elizabeth Woodfin Nevin
Join us as we bid a very fond farewell to Martha Elizabeth Woodfin Nevin of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Martha (lovingly known as “Sister”) was born on October 21, 1946 at the Vaughn Memorial Hospital (now Vaughan-Smitherman Museum) in Selma.
She was born to Mittie Elizabeth Sprott Woodfin and Marion Moore Woodfin. Both families came from a long line of Perry and Dallas county landowners and community leaders.
From an early age, Sister was raised to love and respect her family and her country. She was an honored member of the National Society Daughters of the American Colonists, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and National Society of the Colonial Dames of America.
Goal-oriented and hard-working, Sister was Valedictorian of her senior class at Perry County High School. At the University of Alabama, Sister enjoyed many activities as a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. She met her future husband, Haskell, during their freshman year at a pledge swap in 1965, and they recently celebrated their Golden Anniversary.
Sister was a good and faithful servant and a member of Christ Episcopal Church. She was well known for her generous spirit and treasured as a weekly volunteer at Northport Medical Center.
Haskell and Sister have remained avid Alabama fans and enjoyed participating in the Red Elephant Club. Her favorite hobby was gardening, and if you knew Sister, you probably heard her say, “Flowers make me happy”.
Sister left this life on October 22, 2019, one day after her 73rd birthday. She is survived by her husband, Edward Haskell Nevin of Tuscaloosa; son, Edward Bradshaw Nevin and his wife Michelle Youngblood of Atlanta, Ga.; brother, Luther Woodfin and his wife Margaret of Sprott.
As a child, Sister spent many happy days at her family cottage in Orange Beach. She continued to enjoy this special place with her family and close friends. Sister, you will live forever within our hearts and memories. We love you.
A memorial service will be held at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North, 4905 Highway 69 North Northport, Alabama 35473, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, 2019, with the Reverend Dr. Catherine Collier celebrating. A reception will follow after the service.
Donations may be made to Hospice of West Alabama in lieu of flowers.
