Manly W. Hall Jr. MOUNDVILLE Manly W. Hall, Jr., age 94, of Moundville, passed away October 29, 2013, at home. Services will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday, November 3, at Moundville Methodist Church with Rev. Bill Curtain and Rev. Tom Terry officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Manly was born on December 8, 1918 in Melton, Hale County, Alabama to Manly Winn Sr. and Bessie Johnson Hall. He grew up and worked on the family farm near Greensboro. His wife of 71 years, Inez Davis Hall and his parents preceded him in death. Survivors include three sons, Manly W. III (Vicki) of Bucksnort, Ala., Ronald D. (Jenny) of Foley, Ala., and Michael W. (Mary) of MobiIe, Ala.; two brothers, Wallace Johnson of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Benjamin Thomas of Tuscaloosa; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Manly was a graduate of Greensboro High School in 1937, attended API (Auburn University) on a football scholarship, later transferring to the University of Alabama. With the outbreak of WW II, he volunteered for the Army Air Corps, and proudly served his country as a co-pilot on a B-17 'Flying Fortress" in the 418th Squadron of the 100th Bomb Group (H) of the 8th Air Force. He completed 29 combat missions, including D-Day, from the Group's base at Thorpe Abbotts, in North Anglia, England from March through August 1944. In 1952, he began a thirty two-year career with Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, rising to Executive Director in Hale County. Working out of Greensboro, he assisted local farmers with Federal programs designed to steer farm production, retiring in 1983. Over this same period, he also owned and operated Five Points Mercantile located in Moundville. He was active in the Moundville United Methodist Church throughout his life. He was a member of the Masons for over 60 years. Pallbearers will be Eunice Bibby, Jerry Tucker, Mack Gann, Broderick Davis, Bob Yarbrough, David Hall, Paul Jackson and John Milton Wilson. Honorary pallbearers are Victor Poole and family, Betty Davis and family, Methodist Men's Sunday School Class, Jim and Mildred Elkins family, and Wallace Elliott. The family wishes to thank a special member of the family, Ilean Jackson, as well as a group of cherished caregivers, Burnette Robertson, LaKeshia Harris, Phillesia Ryans, Carrie Ball, Melissa Lewis, and Joyce Sanders. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to United Methodist Children's Home, Ministry Headquarters, 3140 Zelda Court, Montgomery, AL 36106.
