John Freeman "Pete" Gant SAMANTHA | John Freeman "Pete" Gant, age 86, of Samantha, died September 5, 2015, at Hospice of West Alabama. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, September 7, 2015, at Sulphur Springs Free Will Baptist Church with Bro. Rick Taylor and Bro. Jerry Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in Sulphur Springs Cemetery with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North directing. Visitation will be tonight, September 6, 2015, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. He was preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Doshie Gant; brothers, Wilburn Gant, A.M. Gant, and Bud Gant; and sisters, Jean Haygood, and Adrin Castro. He was preceded in death by his son, Johnny Wayne Gant, on the same day 25 years ago. He is survived by his wife, June Gant; one daughter, Joy Herzing (Jerry); one grandson, Peter Gant (Leah); one great-grandson, Preston Gant; one great-granddaughter, Halee Hudson; and one sister, Sally Bates (J.W.). He was born August 18, 1929, in Samantha, Ala. He worked at Central Foundry for 34 years. He then enjoyed cattle farming and being in the hay field. He was named "Father of the Year" in 2003, by Tuscaloosa Cattlemen's Association, and Northside "Lion of the Year" in 2000, 2004, and 2007. Pallbearers will be Albert West, Elden Willingham, Rodney Gilliam, Randy Cannon, Don Davis, and Butch Hudson. Honorary pallbearers are Samantha Volunteer Fire Dept., Northside community, Domino players, and Northside Lion's Club.
