Jeffery S. Brown, age 70, of Northport, Ala., passed away peacefully at Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center surrounded by his loving family on June 1, 2018.
Jeff was born in Fairhope and graduated from Gordo High School in 1966. He proudly served with the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War and thereafter attended the Free Will Baptist Bible College.
In 1976, Jeff joined the United States Army, receiving a commission in the Ordnance Corps in 1978. He continued to serve the military until he retired as a major in 1992. Following his military service, he continued his public service career through a variety of positions, including director of personnel for the cities of Tuscaloosa and Gulf Shores. In 2005 he returned home to west Alabama to serve as the license commissioner for Tuscaloosa County until his retirement in June 2017.
Jeff was the youngest of nine children born to the late Daniel and Lorene Brown of Gordo, Ala., and was the beloved husband of Billie Brown for 49 years.
Jeff was preceded in death by siblings Barbara Ann, Roland, Wayne, and Michael.
He is survived by his wife, Billie; sons, Wesley (Christine) and Wade (Robin); daughter, Hannah Mizzell (Blake); three grandchildren (Isabelle, Owen and Wolff); brother, Daniel Riley Brown; and sisters, Rita Thomas, Bonnie Wharton and his twin, Janice Walters.
Jeff loved God and always found a way to be involved in ministry wherever his duties took him. He cherished people and his community, serving in many civic organizations. He had a deep affinity for his fellow veterans and could often be found coordinating or speaking at events to honor those, and the families of those, who served. He knew no stranger and was one of the friendliest, character-driven men of his time. His friendship, counsel, and warm smile will be missed by many.
A visitation with the family will be held on Saturday, June 2, 2018 at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. There will also be a memorial service held at Magnolia Chapel on Sunday, June 3, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Magnolia Chapel North officiated by the Reverends Jerry Lake and Keith Pugh. There will be a military honors graveside service at Shiloh Free Will Baptist Church in Gordo immediately thereafter (presided over by CAPT Brian Butler, USN).
Pallbearers will be the many nieces and nephews who knew him as "their favorite uncle."
Honorary pallbearers are members of the Gordo High School class of 1966, physicians and staff of Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center - Freedom Hall and Druid City Hospital, and fellow veterans from West Alabama Officers Association, American Legion Post 34, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Marine Corps League Detachment 1272.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those seeking to remember Jeff either volunteer time with a local veterans organization or donate to their home church in his honor or to the care of those served by the Tuscaloosa Veterans Affairs Medical Center https://www.tuscaloosa.va.gov/giving/.
