Howard "Steve" Moffitt, 72 of Tuscaloosa, passed away August 25, 2024 at DCH Regional Medical Center. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at 12:00 Noon at Valley View Baptist Church with Dr. Billy Joy and Dr. Drew Dockery officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00 am ~ 12:00 noon.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Howard E. and Opal C. Moffitt and his son; Curry S. Moffitt.

Survivors include his wife Nancy Mills Moffitt, daughter, Mindy Crawford (Chad), daughter-in-law, Stacey Moffitt, sister, Margaret Goins (Kenneth), brother, Tim Moffitt (Linda), grandchildren, Halle Moffitt, Evan Crawford, Trevor Crawford, and Anna Kate Crawford, and a large extended family whom he loved and cherished.

Steve Moffitt was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa and spent his early years from birth to young adult living in the Duncanville community. He was a 1970 graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School and upon graduation attended Brewer State Junior College. Steve began his career with Tuscaloosa Fire Department on November 9, 1973. After making the rank of Lieutenant in May of 1984, Steve was named as the TFD EMS Coordinator, where he supervised all fire department paramedics and equipment. During that 26-year tenure, he found a love for mentoring future medical professionals and took on a teaching role with the Program of Emergency Medicine at the UA College of Community Health Sciences. Steve retired from TFD at the rank of Captain on February 1, 2000, and moved full time to the Emergency Medicine Program after it relocated to the Alabama Fire College. In February of 2006, Steve transitioned to a role at the Tuscaloosa County Parks and Recreation Authority and closed out his professional career in May of 2020. Former colleagues and students used words like, “pride”, “professionalism”, “dedication”, and “servant leader”, to describe him. He was the personification of the adage, “You were born with the ability to change someone’s life – don’t ever waste it.” Steve never did. He saved lives, he changed lives, and, on a daily basis, he brightened lives.

Steve found immense satisfaction in his lifetime career as a public servant, but his favorite roles were husband, Dad, and “Papa”. His family were his treasures, and he loved and cared for them well. There was no greater love in his life than his love for his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ. He was a devoted member of Valley View Baptist Church and loved studying God’s word and preparing for his weekly Bible Study class.

Faith, family and friends were the hallmark of Steve’s life, and many can fully attest that he “fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith” until he went to his final home in glory on the Lord’s day last Sunday.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue, Tuscaloosa County PARA, DCH TSICU Medical Staff, Dr. Elwin Crawford, Rob Cooper, James Thomas, David Evers, Billy Hulgan, Fred Larkin, the late Steve Ratliff and Glenn Davis.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the Good Samaritans Clinic in Northport, Alabama.
