George Lehman Welch | Visit Guest Book TUSCALOOSA George Lehman Welch, age 91, of Tuscaloosa, died Jan. 10, 2012, at the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center Hospice. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow at 4 p.m. at the Hybart-Bell's Landing Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Hybart, Monroe County, Ala. with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home South directing. The family will receive friends Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church. He was born on Aug. 5, 1920, in Eclectic, Ala., the son of Conlin Lehman Welch and Lelia Williams Welch. He served in the U.S. Marines in World War II as a gunnery instructor and was then sent to serve in the Pacific. In 1945 he married Rebecca Hybart. She died in 1987. After the war he returned to the University of Alabama and studied engineering, graduating in 1950. Mr. Welch was a devoted and energetic supporter of many civic and church groups. He was a longtime member of Kiwanis International. He was also a scoutmaster for Tuscaloosa Boy Scouts, a member of the American Legion, and the Alabama Wildflower Society. Mr. Welch was instrumental in the expansion of the Tuscaloosa County Veterans Park. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa and served as a life deacon. He is survived by his wife, Betty Tanner Welch; two daughters, Rebecca Atwell (Paul) of High Point, N.C. and Lolly Minor (Ron) of San Antonio, Texas; one sister, Marguerite Welch Jones of Florence, Ala.; four grandchildren, Mary Minor, Rebecca Minor, Jon Minor (Erin), and George Minor, all of San Antonio, Texas; and three great-grandchildren, Rebecca Elizabeth Minor, Colton George Minor, and Jonathan Patrick Minor, all of San Antonio, Texas. The family suggests that any memorials be made to Hospice of West Alabama, the First Baptist Church, or the Alabama Wildflower Society (www.alwildflowers.com).
