George Thomas Spence, III, age 74 of Moundville, passed away October 9, 2019 at home. Services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2019, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church at 11:00 am with Rev. Hank Atchison, Rev. Quanah Spence, and Rev. Charles Spence officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte J. Spence; parents, George T. Spence, Jr. and Reaby Louise Spence; and his sister, Vannie Louise Spence.
Survivors include his daughter, Michelle Spence Dockery (Mark) of Moundville; son, George Thomas (Toby) Spence IV (Jackie) of Northport; sister-in-law, Lynne Chavis (Bob) of Moundville; brothers, Rev. Charles Spence (Jean), and Dannie Spence (Marjorie) of Moundville; grandchildren, Kaylee Kennedy (Mitchell) of Northport, Ty Spence (Savanah) of Northport, Summer - Linn Crawford (Caleb) of Moundville, and Courtney and Caroline Dockery of Moundville; great grandchildren, Jaxson and Allyson Kennedy of Northport and the pending arrival of the Crawford twins.
Thomas served in the U.S. Army. After his service in the Army he worked for Thompson Tractor Company, Taylor Coal Company, Drummond Coal Company, Sellers Machine and Fair Contracting, as a master mechanic and heavy equipment operator. He was passionate about gardening and fishing, and he loved Alabama football. He was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and assisted in the construction of Indian Mounds Baptist Church. He was a friend to all who knew him and he was a very generous person with all that he had - a shirt off his back kind of guy.
Pallbearers will be Kai Irwin, Brock Loper, Kevin Nelson, Ty Spencer, Caleb Crawford, and Mitchell Kennedy.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Barnette, Keith Henry, Buster King, Ray Hobson, Alvin Tidmore, Friends and Neighbors of Hale County and Tuscaloosa County. Special thanks to Louise Blank, Linda Lake, and Clint and Gina Perry.
