George Daniel Prewitt, 81, of Northport, Alabama passed away on the morning of July 13, 2021 after an extended illness.
Visitation services will be held at Magnolia Chapel, located at 4905 AL-69, Northport, AL on Friday, July 16 from 6 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at Mt. Olive Baptist Church on Saturday July 17 at 1 pm with Brother Glenn Kennedy officiating.
George was born on July 21, 1939 in Northport, AL. He graduated from Escambia County High School in Atmore, AL where he was a standout defensive lineman on the football team. He later attended the University of Alabama, leaving before completing his degree. He married Betty Thomas Prewitt of Greensboro, AL in 1964.
George retired from BF Goodrich in Tuscaloosa in the early 1990's. During his years at BF Goodrich, he served a leadership role in the United Rubber Workers Union local chapter, where he was a strong advocate for working families in the Tuscaloosa community.
George was a very active member at the J Collier Foster Lodge #906 of Northport serving as Worshipful Master as well as other leadership positions. He loved teaching new members, providing one-on-one instruction to dozens of young men over the years. George served as a guest lecturer at Masonic Lodges throughout the state of Alabama, and organized many fundraising events through the lodge to raise money for Eagle's Wings of Tuscaloosa, a non-profit organization assisting adults with developmental disabilities. After 50 years of service, George was awarded his 50-year Masonic pin in November 2019.
George was also a lifelong member of Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Northport. He was known for his humor, love for food, coffee, friends and family.
He is survived by his wife Betty, daughter Rhonda Prewitt Dunn (Marlon) of Northport, son Bryan Prewitt (Kelly) of Atlanta, step-son Allen Abston (Debbie) of Brookwood, step-daughter Wendy Abston of Coaling, grandchildren Ashleigh Dunn, Heath Dunn, Cole Prewitt, Daniel Prewitt, Blake Abston, Haley Abston, Austin Bush, Adrianna Foster and great grandchildren Steelie Gray, Atley Abston, and Emmett and Kerrigan Foster.
