George Norman Carlson, DMD, age 93, of Northport, died January 30, 2025. A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, February 3rd at St. Mark Church with the Rev. Bo Lloyd officiating. A private family burial service will be held earlier at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home directing.

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, John Dewey Carlson and Willie Lou Moye Carlson, and his wife, Martha Jean Terry Carlson.

He is survived by his son, Dr. John Terry Carlson (Emy) and daughter, Sara Jean Carlson Cooke (Gary); grandchildren, Dr. John Terry Carlson Jr. (DeLauné), Christopher Norman Carlson (Mary Laura), Marianne Mims Carlson Pearce (Taylor), Ana Carlson Jordan (Ty), and Andrew Douglas Cooke; great grandchildren, Adler Ramey Wood, Finley Jean Wood, John Morrow Carlson, Landry Bedford Carlson, Emelyn Mims Pearce, Frank Young Pearce, Carlson Edward Pearce, Wade Norman Carlson, and Boone Frederick Carlson; sisters, Mary Anna Carlson Cannon and Nancy Sue Carlson Kelly; brother, Dr. Allen Bennett Carlson; sister-in-law, Sara Jo Terry Hosey; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Norman was born on March 18, 1931, in Bogalusa, Louisiana, and lived there until August 1941. At that time, his father, who worked for the GM&O railroad, was transferred to Union, Mississippi, where the family lived until August 1949. Norman graduated from Union High School and moved with the family to Northport; and became a student at The University of Alabama.

In 1953, he graduated from the University with a BS in Chemistry and a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the US Army Chemical Corps and married Martha Jean Terry of Northport. To fulfill his two-year active-duty military obligation, Norman was stationed at Fort McClellan, Alabama, and assigned to the staff of the U.S. Army Chemical Corps School.

In 1959, Norman graduated from The University of Alabama School of Dentistry and opened a dental practice in Northport. According to state dental records, he is the first dentist to have a permanent dental practice in Northport. Professionally, he was a member of the Sixth District Dental Society, the Alabama Dental Association, the American Dental Association, and The University of Alabama School of Dentistry Alumni Association.

In 1999, he was presented the Most Excellent Fellow Award by the Alabama Dental Association. In the community he was a member of the Northport Lions Club for over 60 years where he received the Lion of the Year award, as well as the Melvin Jones Fellow award in 2007. He served on the Board of the Black Warrior Council of the Boy Scouts of America and was presented the Silver Beaver Award in 1984. He was also a member of the Boards of the Family Counseling Service, Caring Days Adult Care, Methodist Homes of Alabama and West Florida, and the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama. He was the 1982 Northport Citizen of the Year and in 2013 was inducted into the Tuscaloosa County Civic Hall of Fame.

As a member of Northport First Methodist Church, Norman served as chairman of a committee that organized St. Mark Methodist Church in 1965. As a charter member of the church he served in many capacities, one being a Sunday School teacher for over 40 years.
