Gaines Wendell Lunceford, age 88, of Northport, Alabama, passed away July 30, 2024 at Northport Medical Center. Visitation will be 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, August 5, 2024, at Magnolia Chapel North. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at Campground United Methodist Church with Bro. Paul Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Magnolia Chapel North directing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Temperance Lunceford; and wife, Shirley Smalley Lunceford.
Survivors include his daughters, Sherry Lunceford, Christi Montgomery (Mike), and Angela Guy (Darryl); sister, Hilda Watts (William); brother, Donald Lunceford (Barbara); grandchildren, Shannon Montgomery (Jenny), Chris Montgomery (Brittney), Adam Montgomery (Judy), Holly Boothe (Chase), Sarah Watson (Daniel), Mary Guy, Madison Guy (Tyler), and Noah Guy; great-grandchildren, Chelsie Montgomery, Braylen Montgomery, Ava Montgomery, Dawson Watson, Maelynn Watson, Amelia Boothe, and coming soon, Beckett Boothe; and also many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was employed by Gulf States Paper Mill for 18 years and then BF Goodrich until he retired in 1994. He was a member of Northside Lions Club. He was a lifelong member of Campground Methodist Church and thoroughly loved the community of Samantha. He was a loving, caring person …always lending a helping hand to anyone in need whether it be family or friends, whomever or whatever. He also enjoyed spending time at his second home in Azalea Village, Orange Beach, Ala., where he had lots of friends and people who loved him as much as he loved them.
He was a hard-working man and a licensed electrician by trade and wired many a new home over the years, but there wasn’t much he couldn’t do. He loved growing tomatoes in his back yard for his grand and great-grandchildren who held a special place in his heart. He will be dearly missed by many, especially his children, grand and great-grandchildren, but we find solace in knowing that he is reunited with the love of his life, our mom, Shirley.
Pallbearers will be Shannon Montgomery, Chris Montgomery, Adam Montgomery, Braylen Montgomery, Noah Guy, Daniel Watson, Chase Boothe, and Tyler Blair.
Honorary pallbearers are Carrolls Creek Volunteer Fire Dept., Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office, Dr. Buettner, Dr. Robertson, Doris Williamson, Faye Hamner, Joe and Judy Kilabrew, Vivian Beverly, Larry Swiney, Larry Williamson, and Leroy Lane.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Campground Methodist Church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital at www.stjude.org.
