Emma Smith Wilson NORTHPORT | Emma Smith Wilson of Northport, Alabama lost her courageous battle with cancer on December 18, 2014. A memorial service and celebration of her life will be planned for Emma during the coming weeks. She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Siebert Smith and Mattie Emma Sutherland Smith of Canton, Mississippi and sister, Laurie Catherine Crawford of Jackson, Mississippi. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, Howard Bagby Wilson, her son Robert (Bob) Louis Wilson (Gina) of Tuscaloosa, daughter Laura Leigh Wilson of Northport, granddaughter Rachel Marie Wilson of Birmingham, brother David Arnold Smith (Wensil) of Malvern, Arkansas, and sisters, Rosalind Sutherland Hambrick of Porter, Texas and May Frances Wells (Van) of Ruston, Louisiana. Emma was born in 1935, in Canton, Mississippi. As a young girl, she had a passion for music and always enjoyed playing the piano. She later attended the University of Mississippi, where she met Howard when they were both freshmen. Soon after, they were married and moved to Tuscaloosa where they both attended the University of Alabama. After the birth of their son, she decided to stay at home to raise her children. Emma always taught her children the value of honesty, hard work, and doing a job right the first time. After her children were grown, she began working with her son at Syscon in 1985. Her ability to manage finances and attention to detail played an important role in the growth and success of the company. In her later years, she enjoyed traveling with her husband and spending time with her children and granddaughter. Although she will be dearly missed by her family, we know she is now in God's loving arms. Our family wishes to thank Hospice of West Alabama, especially Holly Sullivan, for their help during Emma's illness. Special thanks go to Brenda Allen for her tender care of Emma during her final weeks at home and also to close family friends, Amy Kilpatrick and Melissa Bobo. We also want to express our appreciation to Rev. Mike Spivey, Wayne Wilson and the entire congregation of First United Methodist Church for all their support and prayers through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her name to First United Methodist Church of Northport or Hospice of West Alabama. Magnolia Chapel North will be handling the arrangements. Funeral Home
