Edgar Lee McGuffie, 88, poured out his life as an offering to God and received his crown of righteousness on Friday, October 20, 2023. There will be a graveside service at Forest Crest Cemetery in Birmingham, AL., on Thursday October 26, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Drew Dockery officiating and Magnolia Chapel South directing.
Edgar (Ed), a devoted husband, a loving father, and a wonderful Poppi, is survived by his wife of 65 years Linda; children, David McGuffie (Dave Mitchell), Leesa Smith (Jim), and Larry Adam McGuffie (Tina); grandchildren, Cortney Streaker (William), Jacob Smith, Adam McGuffie (Kelly), Abby Mills (Tyler), and Emily Smith; great-grandchildren, Robert Streaker, Blair Mills, Declan McGuffie, Charles Streaker, and Maeve McGuffie; and sister Yvonne Latham. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Bert and Lou Etta McGuffie, and five brothers and four sisters.
Ed was born on October 2, 1935, in Ragland, Alabama, where he graduated high school. He then served 32 years in the military, 10 years as active-duty United States Navy and Coast Guard, and 22 years in the Coast Guard reserves. At age 55, he retired from working at the IRS in Birmingham and joined his wife Linda in running her business, Linda's School of Beauty, in Fultondale.
Ed was a man of great faith. He served in multiple leadership positions at Grace Chapel Assembly of God (Birmingham) and Living Waters (Ashville). Ed enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes. He loved to go for drives, and often took the back road. After retirement, Ed and Linda enjoyed fishing and visiting state parks in their RV. He also loved to watch birds in his backyard in his later years. To know Ed was to love him, and he will be sorely missed.
