He opened Shaver Animal Hospital the following year in Tuscaloosa. From 1966 through 1968, Dr. Shaver served in the Army as a Veterinarian based in Omaha, Nebraska. Upon his honorable discharge at the rank of Captain, he returned to Tuscaloosa to resume his practice and has served this community faithfully for the last forty eight years. Doc, as he is known by many, was happiest when he was working on the horses that he treated and cared for. He maintained a practice that serviced both small and large animals. He was always on call and ready to help any animal at any time. Dr. Shaver was a true outdoorsman and avid hunter of birds and big game. His greatest pursuit was hunting Elk in the Rocky Mountains. He shared this passion with many friends and passed on a love of the outdoors to his sons. Dr. Shaver was devoted to his clients and practice which will remain open under the dedicated stewardship of Dr. Ron Barns, DVM. There will be a Celebration of Life to honor Dr. Shaver at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North on Highway 69 North. The family will receive visitors from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.
