Clarence Glaser

Clarence Gilbert Glaser, aged 92 of Northport, Alabama, passed away on December 30, 2021 at Hospice of West Alabama.

A beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle, his family will deeply miss him. Called "Dutch" by most people, he was born in Sullivan Missouri June 13, 1929. Raised on a farm, he learned the value of hard work, leading him to remain employed until 84 years old. A vigorous man all his life, he fought the inevitable decline of aging with his usual resistance to anything he did not like.

Dutch is preceded in death by his parents, Herman and Emma (Kramer) Glaser of Sullivan Missouri and his brother Edwin Glaser of Jefferson City, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Jean (Hargis) Glaser; his daughters, Gail Glaser of Homewood, Alabama and Jeanine Brooks, married to Thomas Brooks of Tuscaloosa Alabama; and his brothers Frederick Glaser, married to Patricia Glaser of Sullivan Missouri and Eugene Glaser, married to Sharon Glaser in The Villages, Florida. He has two grandsons that he was so proud of and who brought him enormous joy: Thomas Brooks III of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Alex Brooks of Atlanta, Georgia.

After graduating from Sullivan High School, Dutch left the farm to join the U.S. Air Force. He served his country in the Korean Conflict, earning a Bronze Star and achieving the rank of Staff Sargent before returning to Colorado Springs, Colorado. There he met and married his wife, Jean. Upon his discharge from the military after 6 years of service, Dutch went to work for the Friden Corporation which over the next decades changed ownership many times. He stayed with the companies through the many changes until his retirement from TRW in Houston, TX.

Upon his retirement Dutch and Jean moved to Northport to be near their grandchildren. Not one to stay retired, Dutch took a new job with the University of Alabama in Parking Services, where he earned the Crimson Spirit Award for Financial Affairs. After twenty years at the University job, he retired again. He was known and appreciated for his ability to make his coworkers laugh and his bluntness. After retirement from the University, they stayed in touch with him. Dutch was an avid lifelong gardener. He always had a vegetable garden to tend and insisted on doing the tough work himself. When not working or gardening, he loved to do yardwork. He was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Parish and had a deep faith in God, in whose presence he now resides.

Graveside services will be held at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park on Tuesday, January 4, 2022 at 11 a.m. with Magnolia Chapel North directing services. Deacon Adrian Straley will officiate.

Honorary pallbearers are his former coworkers at the University of Alabama Parking Services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial to Clarence Glaser may be made to Hospice of West Alabama, if you so wish.
