Barry Gene Thornton

COKER - Barry Gene Thornton, age 71, of Coker, Ala., went to meet his Lord and Savior on March 20, 2018. Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018, at Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North with Bro. Sam Phillips officiating. A private family burial will follow with Magnolia Chapel Funeral Home North directing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred S. Thornton, Sr. and Hazel P. Thornton; and brother, Larry G. Thornton.
Survivors include his daughters, Amy Thornton Lancaster (Toby) of Northport, Ala. and Ginger Thornton Shirley (Todd) of Northport, Ala.; brothers, Fred S. Thornton, Jr. (Linda) and Danny G. Thornton (Nancy); and grandchildren, Jackson Lancaster, Austin Lancaster, Adam Lancaster, Emma Rae Lancaster and Will Shirley.
He was a loving ""Daddy"" that dedicated his life to his children and grandchildren. He was an amazing grandfather, known to most as Babo, constantly bringing fun and joy to our lives. He was always the first to help someone. He truly had a servant's heart. There wasn't anything he could or would not do. His ingenuity and determination impressed everyone.
He honorably chose to join the United States Marine Corps and served as a Cpl. In the 3rd Tank Battalion 3rd Marine Division during the Vietnam War. He supported the Iron Monsters, The deadliest foe of the Viet Cong aggressors. He proved himself worthy, brave and honorable at all times.
He was a talented machinist for 35 years at Uniroyal Goodrich. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Tuscaloosa. He leaves us with many cherished memories and a legacy that will continue for generations to come. He will be missed deeply. There is no other like our Babo.
Pallbearers will be Unites States Marines.
Honorary pallbearers are Billy and Ginny Glenn and all members of rescue units.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
