A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Steve was the son of the late Haynes S. Smith and the late Laura Jane Smith. He was known as Steve to some, "Bubba'' to others, and a loving husband and father to his two children. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1970 and attended the University of Alabama, Stillman College and Jacksonville State University for post-graduate work.
Steve began his career in his grandfather's heating and air conditioning business in high school, which eventually led him to a career in electrical supply sales, where he worked for Mayer Electric, CED, Southern Electric and other supply houses. He was a devoted, lifelong member of First United Methodist Church Tuscaloosa where he was very involved in mission work and enjoyed many trips to aid with the Hurricane Katrina aftermath. He was also active in the Jaycees, and was very involved with his college fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, where he later became the Regional Governor.

Smith, Jr., wife, Allison and granddaughter, Ansley, all of Metairie, La. and also, their daughter, Leigh Anna Smith of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Other survivors include Steve's brothers, Haynes S. Smith, Jr., and his wife, Lindy, their daughters Laura and Leslie, all of Decatur, Ala. and Randall H. Smith of Tuscaloosa.
