Obituary for Stephen Smith
Stephen Lawrence Smith, age 65, beloved husband and father, died January 10, 2018, at Hospice of West Alabama. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, with visitation beginning at 1:30 p.m. prior to the service in the Lee Bible Classroom. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery with Magnolia Funeral Home South directing.
A native of Tuscaloosa, Ala., Steve was the son of the late Haynes S. Smith and the late Laura Jane Smith. He was known as Steve to some, "Bubba'' to others, and a loving husband and father to his two children. He graduated from Tuscaloosa High School in 1970 and attended the University of Alabama, Stillman College and Jacksonville State University for post-graduate work.
Steve began his career in his grandfather's heating and air conditioning business in high school, which eventually led him to a career in electrical supply sales, where he worked for Mayer Electric, CED, Southern Electric and other supply houses. He was a devoted, lifelong member of First United Methodist Church Tuscaloosa where he was very involved in mission work and enjoyed many trips to aid with the Hurricane Katrina aftermath. He was also active in the Jaycees, and was very involved with his college fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi, where he later became the Regional Governor.
Steve is survived by his wife of 42 years, Carole Shuford Smith; their son, Stephen L. Smith, Jr., wife, Allison and granddaughter, Ansley, all of Metairie, La. and also, their daughter, Leigh Anna Smith of Tuscaloosa, Ala. Other survivors include Steve's brothers, Haynes S. Smith, Jr., and his wife, Lindy, their daughters Laura and Leslie, all of Decatur, Ala. and Randall H. Smith of Tuscaloosa. He is also survived by his two sisters-in-law, Cindi Shuford Akins of Birmingham, Ala. and Connie Shuford Warren, her husband, Bob of Columbia, S.C., his nephew, Rob, his wife, Amanda and their two children.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church or Hospice of West Alabama.
